Barrier-free in Bonnevoie
BELVEDERE Architecture was commissioned to make the entrance area of a historic residential building in Bonnevoie fully accessible. The owner, who recently became entirely dependent on a wheelchair, required a reliable solution to overcome existing level differences both inside and outside the building—specifically, a staircase in front of and directly behind the entrance door.
The biggest challenge was the limited space. Due to the complexity of the situation, extremely precise planning and the custom fabrication of two lifting platforms were necessary. Their installation required millimeter-accurate precision. Thanks to BELVEDERE Architecture’s on-site presence and close coordination with specialized craftsmen, a tailored solution was successfully implemented, allowing the owner to access and use their home independently, comfortably, and without barriers.
Further coordination took place with the Institut National pour le Patrimoine Architectural (INPA). As part of the renovation, the existing entrance door from the 1970s was replaced with a historically accurate wooden replica, designed in consultation with heritage conservation authorities. To ensure authenticity, BELVEDERE consulted the Ville de Luxembourg's photographic archives, where images of the original door were found. Additionally, the custom-made door was equipped with an integrated motorization system, providing the mobility-impaired user with easy, automated access.
